In my research I analyse the implications of large-scale agribusiness expansion in countries of the South, especially Malaysia and Indonesia. I look at both environmental policies and labour regimes to argue about the limitations of agribusiness for development. My doctoral research focuses on oil palm plantation agribusiness in Indonesia. At multiple scales, I scrutinize discourses and practices surrounding the allocation of land and the mobilization of labour for this booming industry. I articulate a critique of the ideologies that represent oil palm agribusiness as the only available strategy to achieve socioeconomic development in Indonesia. My research shows how these ideologies preclude the emergence of alternatives to highly-capitalized industrial agriculture. |
